Picture
Delta House, Inc. was proud to serve as one of several sponsors for A Crimson Legacy Affair honoring Benedict College’s new President and Chief of Staff on November 12, 2017 at the Delta Life Development Center. A large cross-section of the community joined to welcome Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, President of Benedict College and Dr. Ceeon Smith, Chief of Staff, to Columbia, South Carolina.

On June 30, 2017, Dr. Artis was unanimously appointed by the Board of Trustees as the 14th President of Benedict College. She is the first-female President in the 147-year history of the college which was founded by a woman, Mrs. Bathsheba Benedict, in 1870.

Dr. Artis comes to Benedict College from Florida Memorial University in Miami where she served for four years as the 13th President and the first female President in that University’s 138-year history. Dr. Artis is a graduate of Vanderbilt University, where she earned a Doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and Policy. She also holds a Juris doctorate from West Virginia University College of Law, and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from sister HBCU, West Virginia State University.

Dr. Smith also comes to Benedict College from Florida Memorial University where she served as Vice President of Communications and External Affairs. She is the first African American to earn a Ph.D in Mass Communication from Arizona State University’s Cronkite School.
